Optimizing Wordpress (part 2)

In the previous issue, I explained how the loading of a page can be sped up by offering the elements in a page in parallel.

This issue will go into the optimization of Apache and the way it offers data to clients. Since these are optimizations for Apache, not only Wordpress will benefit, but almost any other website will as well. Because this was part of my challenge to speeds up my website, I named this post "Optimizing Wordpress (part 2)".

Referrer spam (200912-01)

Recently I've been noticing a referrer spammer targeting my sites from the IP address 94.102.63.60. Trying to promote aimtrust and theinvestblog.

Since there doesnt seem to be any abuse-related email address in the whois info for that address, and the @nl.iqarus.com address doesn't have any MX records, send your abuse mail to admin@ecatel.net, maybe they will eventually take action.

Optimizing Wordpress (part 1)

Since last November I've been busy getting my website noticed by search engines. All  the extra modules and tweaking resulted in an indexable, yet slow-loading website. Not a fun thought if you consider it all looks pretty simple. Google's Webmaster Tools notified me that my site was steadily getting slower and slower. Of course this is a challenge that needs to be crushed! The Webmaster Tools also alerted me to the existence of a Firefox addon called Page Speed, which allows me to test loading speeds of web pages. Later I also started using the YSlow addon. Both addons have Firebug as a dependency. Another tool I have been using is the website www.webpagetest.org. This sites shows you a waterfall chart of all the elements of a page that need to be downloaded, in which order they are downloaded, and how long the downloads take.

I used my résumé page as a reference, it's got a lot of text and no weird stuff like images and whatnot. The first waterfall will show that none of the page's elements are downloaded in parallel.

Finally, things are looking up

My extensive experience in the Linux and UNIX world of computing is paying off. My research for Microsoft will include (secretly) implementing Open Source software and ideas in upcoming releases for the Microsoft Office line and the Microsoft Windows line of products.

I'm very excited about this and I have rediscovered my love for the Windows Operating System. I have droped Gentoo Linux as my favorite OS in favour of the latest Beta of Windows Longhorn to aid the Development Team in their efforts to deliver the best of computive experience to your desktop computer.

Stopping referrer spam (Part 2)

Let's add a little more data to my previous article on stopping referrer spam. It's the current list of blocked IP addresses. Currently the list blocks 245 addresses.

You'll need quicktime to play this though.
And for some reason, it won't load in Safari. I don't feel bad about it, since I don't use Safari ghehe :)
